However, examinations of brand equity in Private Labels (PL) are rather limited. This study aims to compare the validity of the two prominent CBBE models those introduced by Yoo and Donthu (2001) and Nam et al. (2011). In order to test the models and make this comparison, the study collected data from 236 respondents who rated private labels in Spain. A list of 30 different fashion and sportswear PL was introduced to respondents. These brands do not make any reference to the retail store in which they are sold. Research findings suggest that the extended CBBE model introduced by Nam et al. (2011) and Ciftci et al. (2014) is more reliable and valid than Yoo and Donthu’s model for assessing PL.     Electron-Phonon interaction and electronic decoherence in molecular conductors

    We perform a brief but critical review of the Landauer picture of transport that clarifies how decoherence appears in this approach. On this basis, we present different models that allow the study of the coherent and decoherent effects of the interaction with the environment in the electronic transport. These models are particularly well suited for the analysis of transport in molecular wires. The effects of decoherence are described through the D'Amato-Pastawski model that is explained in detail. We also consider the formation of polarons in some models for the electron-vibrational interaction. Our quantum coherent framework allows us to study many-body interference effects. Particular emphasis is given to the occurrence of anti-resonances as a result of these interferences. By studying the phase fluctuations in these soluble models we are able to identify inelastic and decoherence effects. A brief description of a general formulation for the consideration of time-dependent transport is also presented.Comment: 32 pages, 11 eps figures.     Tradução e adaptação transcultural da escala de atividade física para pessoas com deficiência física (PASIPD BR)

    The practice of regular physical activity is important to provide well-being and better quality of life to person with physical disability. There is a lack of standardized and specific instruments in Portuguese to assess the level of physical activity directed at this population. The purpose of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (PASIPD) to Brazilian Portuguese. For the process of transcultural translation and adaptation of the scale, five steps were performed: 1) initial translation; 2) translation synthesis; 3) back-translation; 4) semantic and operational equivalence; 5) Pre-test. In the semantic equivalence, 7 items obtained a concordance index below 70%. In the pre-test the instrument was tested with adults with physical disabilities by six professionals specialized in Physical Rehabilitation. In this stage, only one item had a concordance index below 70%. After adjusting the items that presented difficulty, the scale was considered culturally adequate to verify the level of physical activity in individuals with physical disabilities in Brazil.La práctica de actividad física regular es importante para proporcionar bienestar y una mejor calidad de vida a las personas con discapacidad física. Hay una falta de instrumentos estandarizados y específicos en portugués para evaluar el nivel de actividad física dirigido a esta población. El propósito de este estúdio fue traducir y adaptar culturalmente la Escala de Activitad Física para Personas com Discapacidades Físicas (PASIPD) al portugués brasileño. Para el proceso de traducción y adaptación transcultural de la escala, se realizaron cinco pasos: 1) traducción incial; 2) síntesis de la traducción; 3) traducción inversa; 4) equivalencia semántica y operativa; 5) prueba previa. En la equivalencia semántica, 7 ítems obtuvieron un índice de concordancia inferior al 70%. Em la prueba previa, el instrumento fue probado com adultos con discapacidades físicas por seis profesionales especializados en el campo de la rehabilitación física. En esta etapa, solo un ítem tenía un índice de concordancia inferior al 70%. Después de ajustar los ítems que presentaban dificultad, la escala se consideró culturalmente adecuada para verificar el nivel de actividad física en personas con discapacidades físicas en Brasil.A prática de atividade física regular é importante para proporcionar à pessoa com deficiência física bem-estar e melhor qualidade de vida. Observa-se uma carência de instrumentos padronizados e específicos na língua portuguesa para avaliação do nível de atividade física direcionados a essa população. O estudo teve como objetivo traduzir e adequar culturalmente o instrumento Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities – PASIPD para o português do Brasil. Para o processo de tradução e adaptação transcultural da escala, foram realizadas cinco etapas: 1) tradução inicial; 2) síntese da tradução; 3) retrotradução; 4) equivalência semântica e operacional; e, 5) Pré-teste. Na equivalência semântica, 7 itens obtiveram índice de concordância abaixo de 70%. No pré-teste o instrumento foi testado com adultos com deficiência física, por seis profissionais especialistas na área de Reabilitação Física. Nessa etapa apenas um item teve índice de concordância abaixo de 70%. Após a adequação dos itens que apresentaram dificuldade a escala foi considerada adequada culturalmente para verificar o nível de atividade física em indivíduos com deficiência física no Brasil

    Shot noise in mesoscopic systems

    This is a review of shot noise, the time-dependent fluctuations in the electrical current due to the discreteness of the electron charge, in small conductors. The shot-noise power can be smaller than that of a Poisson process as a result of correlations in the electron transmission imposed by the Pauli principle. This suppression takes on simple universal values in a symmetric double-barrier junction (suppression factor 1/2), a disordered metal (factor 1/3), and a chaotic cavity (factor 1/4). Loss of phase coherence has no effect on this shot-noise suppression, while thermalization of the electrons due to electron-electron scattering increases the shot noise slightly. Sub-Poissonian shot noise has been observed experimentally. So far unobserved phenomena involve the interplay of shot noise with the Aharonov-Bohm effect, Andreev reflection, and the fractional quantum Hall effect.Comment: 37 pages, Latex, 10 figures (eps).     Immunodepletion of high-abundant proteins from acute and chronic wound fluids to elucidate low-abundant regulators in wound healing

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The process of wound healing consists of several well distinguishable and finely tuned phases. For most of these phases specific proteins have been characterized, although the underlying mechanisms of regulation are not yet fully understood. It is an open question as to whether deficits in wound healing can be traced back to chronic illnesses such as diabetes mellitus. Previous research efforts in this field focus largely on a restricted set of marker proteins due to the limitations detection by antibodies imposes. For mechanistic purposes the elucidation of differences in acute and chronic wounds can be addressed by a less restricted proteome study. Mass spectrometric (MS) methods, e.g. multi dimensional protein identification technology (MudPIT), are well suitable for this complex theme of interest. The human wound fluid proteome is extremely complex, as is human plasma. Therefore, high-abundant proteins often mask the mass spectrometric detection of lower-abundant ones, which makes a depletion step of such predominant proteins inevitable.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>In this study a commercially available immunodepletion kit was evaluated for the detection of low-abundant proteins from wound fluids. The dynamic range of the entire workflow was significantly increased to 5-6 orders of magnitude, which makes low-abundant regulatory proteins involved in wound healing accessible for MS detection.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The depletion of abundant proteins is absolutely necessary in order to analyze highly complex protein mixtures such as wound fluids using mass spectrometry. For this the used immunodepletion kit is a first but important step in order to represent the entire dynamic range of highly complex protein mixtures in the future.</p

    Comparative Transcriptional and Translational Analysis of Leptospiral Outer Membrane Protein Expression in Response to Temperature

    Leptospirosis, caused by Leptospira spp., is a disease of worldwide significance affecting millions of people annually. Bacteria of this species are spread by various carrier animals, including rodents and domestic livestock, which shed the leptospires via their urine into the environment. Humans become infected through direct contact with carrier animals or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. Temperature is a key trigger used by many bacteria to sense changes in environmental conditions, including entry from the environment into the host. This study was the first comprehensive research into changes occurring in the outer membrane of Leptospira in response to temperature and how these changes correlate with gene expression changes. An understanding of the regulation and function of these proteins is important as they may provide an adaptation and survival advantage for the microorganism which may enhance its ability to infect hosts and cause disease. Our data suggest regulation of proteins in the outer membrane which may possibly be a mechanism to minimise interactions with the host immune response

    Proteomic analysis of the Plasmodium male gamete reveals the key role for glycolysis in flagellar motility.

    BACKGROUND: Gametogenesis and fertilization play crucial roles in malaria transmission. While male gametes are thought to be amongst the simplest eukaryotic cells and are proven targets of transmission blocking immunity, little is known about their molecular organization. For example, the pathway of energy metabolism that power motility, a feature that facilitates gamete encounter and fertilization, is unknown. METHODS: Plasmodium berghei microgametes were purified and analysed by whole-cell proteomic analysis for the first time. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD001163. RESULTS: 615 proteins were recovered, they included all male gamete proteins described thus far. Amongst them were the 11 enzymes of the glycolytic pathway. The hexose transporter was localized to the gamete plasma membrane and it was shown that microgamete motility can be suppressed effectively by inhibitors of this transporter and of the glycolytic pathway. CONCLUSIONS: This study describes the first whole-cell proteomic analysis of the malaria male gamete. It identifies glycolysis as the likely exclusive source of energy for flagellar beat, and provides new insights in original features of Plasmodium flagellar organization

    Pathogenic Bacillus anthracis in the progressive gene losses and gains in adaptive evolution

    Background: Sequence mutations represent a driving force of adaptive evolution in bacterial pathogens. It is especially evident in reductive genome evolution where bacteria underwent lifestyles shifting from a free-living to a strictly intracellular or host-depending life. It resulted in loss of function mutations and/or the acquisition of virulence gene clusters. Bacillus anthracis shares a common soil bacterial ancestor with its closely related bacillus species but is the only obligate, causative agent of inhalation anthrax within the genus Bacillus. The anthrax-causing Bacillus anthracis experienced the similar lifestyle changes. We thus hypothesized that the bacterial pathogen would follow a compatible evolution path. Results: In this study, a cluster-based evolution scheme was devised to analyze genes that are gained by or lost from B. anthracis. The study detected gene losses/gains at two separate evolutionary stages. The stage I is when B. anthracis and its sister species within the Bacillus cereus group diverged from other species in genus Bacillus. The stage II is when B. anthracis differentiated from its two closest relatives: B. cereus and B. thuringiensis. Many genes gained at these stages are homologues of known pathogenic factors such those for internalin, B. anthracis-specific toxins and large groups of surface proteins and lipoproteins. Conclusion: The analysis presented here allowed us to portray a progressive evolutionary process during the lifestyle shift of B. anthracis, thus providing new insights into how B. anthracis had evolved and bore a promise of finding drug and vaccine targets for this strategically important pathogen

    The benefit of symbols: monkeys show linear, human-like, accuracy when using symbols to represent scalar value

    When humans and animals estimate numbers of items, their error rate is proportional to the number. To date, however, only humans show the capacity to represent large numbers symbolically, which endows them with increased precision, especially for large numbers, and with tools for manipulating numbers. This ability depends critically on our capacity to acquire and represent explicit symbols. Here we show that when rhesus monkeys are trained to use an explicit symbol system, they too show more precise, and linear, scaling than they do using a one-to-one corresponding numerosity representation. We also found that when taught two different types of representations for reward amount, the monkeys systematically undervalued the less precise representation. The results indicate that monkeys, like humans, can learn alternative mechanisms for representing a single value scale and that performance variability and relative value depend on the distinguishability of each representation
